FORMALWEAR TIPS & MONEY SAVING IDEAS

Submitted by Duckys Formalwear

How far in advance should I order my tuxedos and have everyone come in for a fitting?

It's best to order your tuxedos about 3 months prior to the wedding so there's enough time to make sure everything is in stock.  This also gives the wedding party enough time to get fitted.  All measurements should be completed a month before the wedding.  If you have a large group coming in to be fitted, it is recommended that you call ahead.

Who in the wedding party should get a tuxedo?

Typically the groom and groomsmen wear tuxedos for the wedding.  If there are ushers involved it is traditional to put them in tuxedos that would match the groomsmen.  The fathers and grandfathers of the bride and groom may also wish to wear tuxedos.  There are even baby tuxes for ages 6 months and up.

Should the groom wear something different from his groomsmen?

It is common to see the groom color matching the bride's colors, and the groomsmen color matching the bridesmaids.  However, the tuxedos should be chosen based on whatever the couple is most comfortable with.

Does it matter where we order our tuxedos?

Yes.  There is a common misconception that all tuxedo stores are the same.  Never order your tuxedos from a store that can't have the wedding party try on their tuxedos before the date of the wedding.  Many stores do not have tuxedos in-stock and cannot help you if something goes wrong with the order.  If last minute changes need to be made, they won't be able to send new tuxedos because often times the location where they order them from is 3 or 4 states away.  Ask the store personnel if they carry all their tuxedos in stock.

     Should we rent shoes?

Yes. Ordering shoes may cost an extra $10 - $20, but it will enhance the overall look of the wedding party by ten-fold.  If you don't order shoes for the groomsmen and allow them to provide their own, the look will not be uniform and the shoe styles may not compliment the tuxedo they are wearing.

Several members of our wedding party live out of town.  How should we have them get fitted?

Most tuxedo stores are part of the IFA (International Formalwear Association).  This organization provides each of it's member stores with out-of-town measurement cards.  If members of your party are unable to get fitted at the store you are renting your tuxedos from, have them get fitted by a tuxedo store that is local to them and fax or call in the measurements.  It is essential that out-of-town party members then try on their tuxedo BEFORE they leave the store in case the measurements were incorrect.. If the store personnel do not ask you to try on the tuxedo, they do not care about the quality of your special day.

How do tuxedos vary in cost?

Tuxedos differ in cost primarily in their styles and brands.  A tuxedo that has 3 or 4 buttons will generally cost more than one that has 1 button.  Name brands also typically cost more.  A few popular brands are Claiborne, Perry Ellis, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren and Ecko Unltd.

What kinds of tuxedos look best on men?

When picking out your tuxedos consider the shape of the men that will be wearing them.  If the majority of the groomsmen are not very tall, it is probably best not to order tuxedos with very long coats.  As a general rule of thumb: shorter men look best in short coats, and taller men look best in long coats.  The style of vest usually does not reflect the size of men, and ties are about 50 - 50.  Half of the tuxedos ordered have bow ties, while the other half have long ties.  It depends on the personal preference of the bride and groom.
